5 Signs Your Child Suffers From Anxiety

DIFFICULTY SLEEPING

It’s normal for children to have trouble sleeping when they are very young, but if your little one is still having difficulty either getting to sleep or staying asleep as they get older, it could be a sign that they have anxiety. Anxiety can manifest by causing excess worry, which can make it difficult for your child to sleep if they are up worrying or they have a million different thoughts running through their head.

ANGRY OUTBURSTS

Anxiety is often the result of being overstimulated, such as when they are surrounded by too many people or even if they’re in a stressful environment. The overstimulation can present itself in many different ways, but for some children, it’s presented in anger. If your child is prone to angry outbursts for seemingly no reason, it could be because they are overstimulated.

AFRAID OF MAKING MISTAKES

When a child has anxiety, they may vocalize that they are afraid of making any sort of mistake, which can sometimes lead parents to believe their child is a perfectionist. However, a child may be anxious about the consequences of making a mistake or have a fear of imperfection that is triggered by their anxiety.

WORRIES ABOUT THE FUTURE

The future is unknown, and that fear of the unknown can sometimes cause anxiety in young children. They may worry about things way off in the distance, such as starting a new grade, and they may ask you multiple questions and give you “what if” scenarios. Instead of brushing off your child’s fears, try to calm them down and consider that it may be their anxiety causing them to worry.

AVOIDS SOCIAL SITUATIONS WITH OTHER KIDS

It’s normal to see adults with social anxiety, but many people don’t associate the same symptoms with children. That being said, it’s not uncommon for children to have social anxiety, and if you have a child who sometimes avoids social situations with other children, or keeps to themselves if they are put in one of those situations, it could be a sign that your child has a form of social anxiety.
